Sometimes we see a broad sideband at lesser schottky frequencies to the high intensity thorium beam.

Pic 1 shows the relative broad sideband on the left.

Pic 2 depicts the vanishing of the sideband after ~1-2 minutes.

These are not the sidebands. Maybe some short-lived fragments survive even after the scrapers are used?

We have 238U92+ centered in the ring with typically a few times 10⁷ ions.

SA_SZ (GE02DD2_G): Voltage 1200 V, Recomnied peak was scraped at about -50 mm, set the detector position to -25 mm 
We see very clean signals with amplitude 1,5V (Foto will follow). Threshhold: CFD "25" arb. units. count rate 8kHz - 10 kHz
Rise time 6ns (with all the cables).

NA_SZ (GE01DD2AG): No signals - cables in the ESR need to be checked

NI_SZ (GE01DD2IG): Can not be positioned, error from Control system: "Auftr. Stattus position set value out of range", Drive can however be positioned to the "Endlage innen" and "Endlage außen".

The Test above were with a DC beam. With a bunched beam we more rapidly loose the ions with the particle detector.

We the mid- and night shift (Wilfried, Simon, Patrick, Ken and me) we not able to manipulate the scrapers in the E-Cooler.

- Carsten contacted Markus concerning this issue.
- Markus replied one should follows the instructions he forward us. They are given in Entry 39 (this e-log)

Alternatively you can use ATPPC030 for viewing the 410 Schottky

Schottky can be displayed using GSI's standard remote desktop connection from any standard GSI computer that is connected or registered with GSI's
cable network.



On windows choose --> remote desktop connection
On Linux choose --> KRDC or from command line prompt you cab also use XFREERDP)
On Apple choose --> Microsoft Remote Desktop



  • then connect using experiment account using RDP protocol:

    enter password


    on desktop there is an icon called "SignalVu Schottky"

    On the menu --> Instrument --> Connect --> USB device

    245 MHz resonator: RSA607A::B021694
    410 MHz resonator: RSA607A::B021705


    by default you can use the 245 MHz resonator.

    default setting is set to 244 MHz and span 20 MHz, if there is a beam in ESR you will see it.

    The ring SIS/ESR were set up for 229/89+. Pölease note that this not only 1e- Th but ponteially also the isobars of Ac (0e-1)/Pa(2e-, strongest) and U(3e-).
    SIS eenrgy plus 3.5 MeV/u w.r.t. to the 238U92+ settings. We nearly don't see any of the primary beam in the ring
    Cooling energy is 208998 KeV (read from the ESR multimeter).
    The positioning of the scrapers is automatized but needs to be checked again tomorrow.
    In order to allow for a longer measurment time, the electron curent is 500mA only during injection but is decreased to 100mA during measurement (=> longer beam lifetime).

    After fixing the broken water connector in the laser head a new water leak appeared in the Quanta-Ray power supply.

    We found the leak in the water pump flow line (arrow up). We took the water connectors appart, rebuilt the teflon seeling and put the water connectors back again.

    Laser is back in operation.

    On Thursday afternoon (22.07.2021) a water connector has broken and water has been spilled in the laser head.

    The solution of increasing the Q-switch window from 2us to 5us described in ID:148 fulfills its purpose, but the window is unstable.
    We saw the laser jumping across the screen which was because the Laser had a lot of hickups.
    The hickups come from the signal which determines the duration of the window.
    This window "flickers". It gets very small, leaving no time for coincident events which fire the laser.
    This is probably an issue with the NIM module.
    Compare the picture below: The oscilloscope freezes and only the first of the yellow pulses is visible which should repeat and span 5us at the moment.

    After looking at the different signals to trigger the laser on the oscilloscope, the laser does not fire anymore when used in the external trigger mode.
    However, all signals are looking good and everything should be in the same state as before.
    The internal Q-switch works as good as before.
